Boom Barrier Motor Types Compared: AC Induction vs Brushless DC vs Servo
Release time:
2026-10-19
Brushless DC is the right default for boom barriers: it delivers 5,000,000 cycles, 85% efficiency and soft acceleration curves. Choose servo only where you need closed-loop position control, and AC induction only for light-duty sites under 100 cycles per hour.
The motor determines four things nobody can tune away later: how many cycles the barrier survives, how loud it is, whether it starts in winter, and how smoothly the arm decelerates. Pick it before you look at anything else.
AC induction motors
AC induction drives are cheap and robust, and they dominate the residential segment. They have no brushes, but they run at low efficiency, generate significant heat, and offer only crude speed control. Opening and closing speed is fixed by the crank geometry rather than by the controller, so the arm slams at both ends of travel unless a mechanical damper is fitted.
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors
BLDC drives reverse the arrangement: permanent magnets on the rotor, electronic commutation in the controller. Efficiency rises sharply, heat drops, and the controller gains full command of the speed curve. This is what makes soft start, soft stop and variable speed possible, and it is why BLDC is the standard for 100% duty barriers.
Servo motors
A servo drive adds a position encoder to a BLDC motor. The controller now knows the exact arm angle at every millisecond and can hold position against wind load, reverse instantly on obstruction, and replicate a saved motion profile. Servo is specified for high-speed lanes, airport aprons and anywhere the arm must stop mid-travel.
Verified performance data
Condition: endurance bench, 6 m arm, 25 °C. Result: BLDC 5,000,000 cycles; servo 5,000,000 cycles; AC induction 1,500,000 cycles. Benchmark: 1,000,000 cycles is the entry threshold for commercial barriers.
Condition: electrical efficiency at rated torque. Result: BLDC 85%, servo 88%, AC induction 62%. Benchmark: EU Ecodesign IE3 requires 82.5% for this power class.
Condition: sound pressure at 1 m during opening, 3 m arm. Result: BLDC 54 dB(A), servo 51 dB(A), AC induction 68 dB(A). Benchmark: 60 dB(A) is the practical limit for residential night operation.
Condition: cold-start test after 12 h soak. Result: BLDC starts at -40 °C, AC induction at -20 °C. Benchmark: -25 °C covers most of Central and Northern Europe.
Selection matrix
- Residential, <100 cycles/hour: AC induction or 24 V DC. Lowest cost, adequate life.
- Commercial parking, 100-300 cycles/hour: 24 V BLDC.
- Toll, logistics, port, >300 cycles/hour: 100% duty BLDC, 3-6 s opening.
- High-speed or windy exposed lanes: servo with encoder feedback.
FAQ
Do brushless motors need maintenance?
No scheduled maintenance. There are no brushes to replace. Inspect the gearbox oil every 3,000,000 cycles and check the arm balance spring annually.
Why is my barrier noisy if it has a BLDC motor?
Noise usually comes from the gearbox or from an unbalanced arm, not the motor. Re-torque the arm clamp, re-tension the balance spring, and check gearbox oil level before suspecting the drive.
Can I retrofit a BLDC drive into an AC barrier cabinet?
Rarely worth it. The crank geometry, balance spring rate and controller are matched as a set. Replacement of the complete drive unit is normally cheaper than the engineering time.
