Barrier Arm Length vs Opening Speed: The Engineering Trade-off
Release time:
2026-10-19
Arm length and opening speed are linked by tip speed, which should stay under 5 m/s for a safe, durable installation. A 3 m arm opens in 1.2 s; a 6 m arm needs 3.0 s at the same tip speed. Where headroom is limited, use an articulated or folding arm instead of shortening the opening.
Specifying a barrier by opening speed alone is the most common way to buy the wrong machine. The number that matters is how fast the tip of the arm is travelling, because that is what the balance spring, the gearbox and the arm itself have to absorb.
The tip speed constraint
Tip speed equals the arc travelled by the arm tip divided by the opening time. For a 6 m arm rotating through 90 degrees, the tip sweeps roughly 9.4 m. Opening that in 1.8 s puts the tip at 5.2 m/s; opening it in 3.0 s puts the tip at 3.1 m/s. The second barrier is slower on the spec sheet and considerably longer-lived in the lane.
Choosing arm type by clearance
- Straight arm: needs full arm length of headroom. Use for widths up to 6 m with clear overhead space.
- Articulated (90 degree) arm: folds at the joint, needs only about 60% of the width in headroom. Use under beams, canopies and low soffits.
- Folding (180 degree) arm: needs roughly half the width. Use in underground car parks and tunnels.
- LED or advertising arm: adds mass; derate opening speed by 20% and confirm the spring rate.
Verified performance data
Condition: 3 m straight aluminium arm, 25 °C, no wind. Result: 1.2 s opening, tip speed 4.2 m/s. Benchmark: 5.0 m/s is the practical ceiling for long service life.
Condition: 6 m straight arm, same drive unit. Result: 3.0 s opening, tip speed 3.1 m/s. Benchmark: forcing 1.8 s on a 6 m arm triples balance spring fatigue.
Condition: articulated 90 degree arm covering 4.5 m. Result: 1.8 s opening with 2.7 m of headroom. Benchmark: a straight arm covering 4.5 m needs 4.6 m of headroom.
Condition: 6 m arm under steady crosswind. Result: stable operation to 20 m/s (Beaufort 8). Benchmark: 13.9 m/s is the Beaufort 6 threshold commonly quoted for light arms.
Wind, mass and spring balance
Every arm is counterbalanced by a spring matched to its length and mass. If you shorten the arm on site without re-tensioning the spring, the motor works against an unbalanced load and the cycle life collapses. If you fit an LED or advertising arm, the spring must be upgraded at the same time.
FAQ
Can I cut a 6 m arm down to 4 m on site?
You can, but the balance spring must be re-tensioned afterwards or the motor will carry the static load continuously. Order the arm at the correct length instead.
How fast does a toll lane actually need to be?
1.2 s to 1.8 s is sufficient for a 25 km/h approach with a 6 m stopping distance. Below 1.0 s the throughput gain disappears because vehicle reaction time dominates.
Do articulated arms wear out faster?
The knuckle joint adds one wear point requiring annual greasing. In exchange you keep the opening speed you need under a low soffit, which is usually the better trade.
